Family & Consumer Sciences

The Family & Consumer Sciences Department offers a variety of courses that will enable a student to succeed in their personal and professional lives. As part of the Career and Technical Education department, CTE, we give students the life skills needed to manage the challenges needed to live and work in a diverse global society. Family & Consumer Sciences prepares our students with the skills needed to live in the 21st Century. Our department is dedicated to ensuring all of our students learn how to think critically, solve problems and make informative and knowledgeable decisions in all aspects of their lives. With our Middle School and High School programs, we will encourage an appreciation of each individual throughout the life cycle. Each course provides a forum for practical applications of basic knowledge which incorporates reading comprehension, mathematical concepts, oral communication and written communication.

Smithtown High School Preschool Program

Smithtown High School’s Early Childhood and Preschool classes have been successfully running a fully operational pre-school for over thirty years.

Our program provides a pre-school for the children of the community every March – June, two days a week. The high school students work one on one with the children as well as in group settings. The pre-school children are taught based on their individual needs. They get a one on one lesson every week! The children will also experience arts and crafts, free play, healthy snacks, reading time, and games.

Preschool days and hours:

Tuesdays and Thursdays

11:30-1:25

*times may vary a little according to school

Sign up for the preschool is on a first come basis. The preschool is open to children ages 3-5.

Multiple pathways recognize the importance of engaging students in rigorous and relevant academic programs. The regulations approved in 2015 and 2016 recognize students’ interests in various areas, such as Career and Technical Education (CTE).

Under the “4+1” pathway assessment option, students must take and pass four required

Regents Exams (one in each of the following subjects: English Language Arts, Mathematics,

Science, and Social Studies) and complete a comparably rigorous pathway to meet the fifth

assessment requirement for graduation.
